30 Days 30 Beers: Day 30

Day 30:

The Bitter End- Two Brothers Brewing Co.

Clever eh?

Anyhow, this one's pretty good... Figured it would be more bitter with the name?  Still, nice flavorful APA, lemon/pine really stands out, almost too much, but doesn't quite cross the line.  A little too much carbonation, in my opinion,  but not enough to ruin the experience.

Final Thoughts:
Definitely was good to get out of my "comfort zone" and try different varieties.  Some that I thought I would love I just found OK and some I thought I wouldn't care for ended up being favorites.
If you enjoy beer, I highly recommend taking on this challenge.  Even if you do it just on Friday and Saturday instead of 30 straight days.
I think I'll be taking a bit of a break from this, but I may do another one in a few weeks... Fall Brews are starting to come out.

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 29

Day 29:

Fat Tire

(Stock Image)

Ok, umm, I think it was pretty good... I drank quite a few of them at the bar.  They seemed to taste pretty good, and went down easy.
I wish I could remember more, but we split a couple of pitchers of Bud Light after that, which sucked, but I wasn't paying for it so I didn't bitch too much.
Editor's note:  This was consumed on Friday 8/3, but I didn't post it until 8/4...

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 28

Day 28:

Original Flag Porter- Darwin Brewery UK

Holy crap, the smell... Seriously almost dumped it right down the drain without drinking it.  Thought at first it smelled like Brandy, but I don't think that was it... maybe a weird cross between raisin and black licorice?  Ridiculously overpowering though.  Caveat: I am not a fan of black licorice or raisins (and Brandy and I had a falling out years ago) so maybe the average person wouldn't even notice the smell.

Fortunately for me, the taste is much different than the smell with the licorice/raisin barely distinguishable.  Some hints of chocolate.  Quite sweet.  To be honest, there's not a whole lot of flavor there.  Not nearly what one would expect from the smell.  Very drinkable.

Bottle states it was brewed with yeast that was salvaged from a ship that sank in the English Channel in 1865 using a 19th century recipe... Interesting history

We interrupt your regularly scheduled program...

...to bring you the following message.

Dear dumbass eBay Sellers:
Your shitty ass 1977 pong clone consoles are not worth $1000.
Your shitty ass 1977 pong clone consoles are not worth $500.
Your shitty ass 1977 pong clone consoles are not worth $100.
Your shitty ass 1977 pong clone consoles are not worth $50.
Your shitty ass 1977 pong clone consoles are not worth $10.

Now normally I wouldn't complain about such a thing, but since you can't seem to get this through your stupid pathetic little minds, and keep relisting them over and over and over again, completely unaware that the reason nobody is buying them is because nobody wants that crap at any price, let alone the ridiculous amount that you seem to think this "one of a kind gem" is worth, I find it has become necessary to point this out to you.
Not that it will matter.
You'll go on thinking that you're sitting on a gold mine, and the only reason someone hasn't jumped at the chance is that black guy in the White House (or if you're on the other side, substitute the Prez with those damn tea party obstructionists in congress) has single handedly ruined the economy so much that there is nobody left that can afford this piece of history, (despite the incredibly "reasonable" price you are "sacrificing" it at...
But lets be real here... Even if the item was actually "Like New" (and just for reference, putting a beat to shit item in a plastic bag, and putting it back into an original box that looks like it had been run over by a herd of stampeding cattle does not constitute "like new") as you claim, you would be lucky to get 10% of what you are asking.
Yes, it is true, there are Pong systems out there that can bring a decent price.  An original first run Odyssey (not Odyssey 100-5000, or Odyssey2) can fetch a pretty penny if it is complete.  And something like a Nintendo Color TV Game is highly collectable for collectors of all things Nintendo.  But you don't have a  first run original Odyssey, or a Nintendo Color TV game... you have some shit ass Radio Shack toy that had over 2 million produced, and at least a few hundred thousand (if not more) are currently sitting in closets across this wonderful country waiting for their owners to dig out and throw up on eBay (for way more than they're worth.)

Just so you know, my intentions are honest.  I am not trying to convince you to drop the price, so that I can come in and snatch it up and sell it off at a 1000% profit to my secret connections in the gaming community.  To be honest, I have no intention of purchasing said pong unit.  I have several of my own, and lets be honest, if you've played one, you've played them all.  Not a whole lot of variety there.  Hey, you can even add me to your list of unapproved bidders if you want.  All I am trying to do is give you a bit of reality here, and maybe save you a bit of cash (those eBay fees have got to be a killer)
So with that, I bid (no pun intended) you good luck in your future endeavors, and hope that just maybe a bit of this will sink in.
Sincerely
A guy who knows just a couple things about collecting video games.

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 27

Day 27
Ranger IPA: New Belgium Brewing

Flavor hits you like a freight train right out of the gate.  But in a good way...
Interesting combination of citrus and pine flavors.  Bitter, as it should be.

Haven't really mentioned head or lacing on these as I'm not really sure how much of a difference that the visual makes, but this beer had a great head (1" plus of frothy white) to it, and probably the most lacing of any of the beers that I have tried so far.

Not bad, not bad at all.

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 26

Day 26:
Atwater Brewery Dirty Blonde Ale

Aptly named beer, the appearance is "Dirty Blonde" slightly hazy golden color.
Taste is pretty good, hint of Orange peel gives it almost a lemony flavor, but not too much, the orange/lemon hits you first, followed by coriander, which seems to linger.  Still pretty sweet, with just a bit of bitter bringing up the rear.
Easy drinking.  Pretty light but good.
Seems like this would be a nice change of pace beer.

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 25

Day 25:
Raspberry Ale: Dark Horse Brewing Co.

Unlike the brew from yesterday, this "fruit beer" understands a basic tenet:  Beer First, fruit second.
And this one, the fruit definitely doesn't overpower the beer.  In fact, it's barely distinguishable, which is good, because there really isn't a whole lot of beer flavor here either.  Really light, might be a good hot summer day beer other than the sweetness would eventually get to be too much.

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 24

Day 24:
Magic Hat Brewing Co #9 Not Quite Pale Ale

Ummm, Wow.

If you like Apricot, this is the beer for you.  I have never heard of this one before, nor did the label give any indication of it being a "fruit beer" as far as I could tell.  Needless to say I was quite surprised.  But that's not always a bad thing.  However in this case...
Holy crap does the apricot flavor stand out... This one is sweet, very sweet.  The apricot flavor practically drowns out everything else, but the finish is slightly bitter, just enough to remind you that this is in fact a beer of some sort.
Really having a hard time finishing this one... To be honest, at times it tastes more like apricot flavored club soda than a beer.
If my wife wasn't already sleeping, I'd let her finish this one off.

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 23

Day 23:
Old Brown Dog Ale

I can't say I've ever tasted an old brown dog, but I imagine if I did, it would taste something like this.   ;)

Seriously though, I dunno, I've heard a lot of great things about this one, but it was just ok for me.  Definitely not one I'd actively seek out in the future.

Thursday, July 26, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 22

Day 22:
Guinness Black Lager

It tastes very similar to an original Guinness... but different.
At first I wanted to say it tastes like a watered down Guinness, but that's not exactly it, as there is plenty of flavor here.  It's just not as heavy.  Not as thick.  A bit easier to drink.
That being said, I prefer the original.
But this isn't a bad alternative at all.

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 21

Day 21:
Lilja's Sasquatch Stout.

Sasquatch tested, Sasquatch approved.

Actually another very good stout.  Good chocolate/coffee flavor, not a lot of bitterness.  Very dark.  Tasty.
I prefer "The Poet" to this one but not by much.
Side note, I don't know what the f**k is up with the label...
"Brewed behind the cheddar curtain"
"ylnevaeh spoh"
"When it's time to relax one stout stands clear, If you've got the beast we've got the beer"
all scrawled in various places on the bottle.  Picture of a gorilla (sasquatch?) with black painted toenails, and all green eyes.

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 20

Day 20: Country House Red Ale- Argus Brewery Chicago

I enjoyed this one, even though it's not nearly as strong as other Red Ales I have had.  Still, it's a decent tasting beer, not very bitter, definite hints of caramel, some bready-ness.  Slight hints of citrus.  Very drinkable.

Monday, July 23, 2012

30 days 30 beers: Day 19

Day 19:
Singletrack Copper Ale

Can't quite put my finger on exactly why, but I really did not like this one.
Not a very strong beer, and what flavor is there just isn't very good.  Somewhat bitter, somewhat citrusy, mostly just meh.
The drink by date was July 10th though, so maybe it was just past its prime?

Editor's note: just noticed that none of the links for the pics are working, so I'm in the process of reuploading them here... sorry.

Sunday, July 22, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers Day 18

Day 18
Shiner Wild Hare Pale Ale

Nothing special about this one, not a whole lot of flavor to it, little bit of citrus, some malty flavor, nothing too exciting.  Not much bitterness at all.
Not bad or anything.  It goes down real easy, and actually it hit the spot on a hot summer day.
But so does Budweiser...

Saturday, July 21, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 17

Day 17:
Newcastle Brown Ale.

Man, How can I explain this one...
Remember those old Sunny Delight commercials where the kids would come in and check the fridge, and the one kid would be like "We got soda, milk, purple stuff, Sunny D..." and everyone wants the Sunny D?
This beer is the "Purple Stuff"
It'll sit in the fridge while all of the cooler beers get picked first, then when you check the fridge, you're a little disappointed that there isn't something better, but grab the Newcastle anyway.  And then when you drink it, you think something like,  Hey this is actually pretty damn good.

Friday, July 20, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 16

Day 16:
Mendocino Brewing Co.  Red Tail Ale

Decent American Amber Ale...  Slightly bitter with some hints of lemon/orange peel flavor.
Very little aftertaste, comes in bitter from the beginning, but the bitterness fades pretty quick.
All in all a decent beer.  Definitely a keeper.

Thursday, July 19, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 15

Day 15:
Decadent Dark Chocolate Ale- Atwater Brewery

At least I think this is beer... kinda tastes like a chocolate soda to me.  Very chocolatey, with the slightest bitter aftertaste to remind you that you are in fact drinking a beer.
I mean it's pretty good... but then again so is Canfields Chocolate Fudge soda.  Of course you can't get drunk off the Canfields.
It goes down really easy, but the overwhelming presence of chocolate makes me not want to drink too many of them... it'd be like chugging down bottles of chocolate milk; fun and tasty at first, but after the second or third not so much.
Still, I'd definitely have one every now and then...

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 14

Day 14:
Tommyknocker Brewery Vienna Style Amber Lager

Pretty good amber lager.  Moderately sweet, fruity.  Nothing  remarkable, but tasty.
Would drink this one again.

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 13

Day 13:
Flying Dog "Doggie Style" Classic Pale Ale

Yes I bought it for the name.  Bottle looked pretty interesting too.
I'm really not sure on this one, it's not too bad, but the citrus overtones were too much to me.  This one tasted almost too sour at times.
Just looked at the date code on the bottle 26ja12, maybe it's too old or something  |DUNNO|

Monday, July 16, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 12

Day 12

The Poet Oatmeal Stout: New Holland Brewing

I can't recall having an oatmeal stout before, but if this one is a good representative, I'll definitely be trying more.
Seems to be a nice blend of coffee, chocolate, and oat flavors.  Very good.

Sunday, July 15, 2012

30 Beers 30 Days: Day 11

Day 11:
Smithwicks Irish Ale.

Been a fan of this one for a while.

Some interesting tidbits about this beer...

It's actually pronounced like Smid-dicks, not the way it is spelled.
It is Ireland's oldest Ale, and is still brewed at the Brewery at St Francis Abbey in Kilkenny, Ireland, and has been since 1710.

Saturday, July 14, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers Day 10

Day 10:

Rogue American Amber Ale

Pretty good, smooth sweet initial taste with a bitter aftertaste that lingers a bit on the tongue.

Not necessarily anything to get super excited about, but I would gladly drink this one again.

Thursday, July 12, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 8

Day 8:
Ouisconsing Red Ale: Central Waters Brewing Company

Not the best red ale out there, but pretty good, very drinkable.
Bottle claims that Ouisconsing Red makes even our neighbors to the south and west "want to be a badger"
I wouldn't go that far ;)

In case you are wondering about the name, apparently it is Algonquin for Wisconsin.

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 7

Day 7:
Schlafly Pale Ale

Pretty decent pale ale.  Better than the average fare, but nothing truly remarkable.
Really goes down easy though, could see this being a good weekend beer.
Label describes it pretty accurately: Rich Amber-colored medium-bodied British-style ale with a smooth mild hop character.  Perfect for Hot summer days and nights as well as a cozy winter fire.

30 Days 30 Beers: Day 6

Day 6:
Mojo IPA- Boulder Beer Company

Pretty good IPA.  Quite tasty.  Nice citrusy flavor, ends with a bitter finish, very easy to drink.

I'd buy this again.

30 beers 30 days: Day 5

Day 5:
Blue Moon...

Sorry for the shit pic.  Cell phone pic in a dark bar...Stupid cell phone fucked up the video I took too, so not thrilled with the phone right now.
I was at a bar I've never been to before to see Drag The River, and couldn't really see their bottled beer (and of course they didn't have a list) so I grabbed this off tap... along with a couple of Budweisers.
All in All a cool time, got to hang out with some buds, and the band after the show, so it's all good.

Saturday, July 07, 2012

30 Days 30 Beers Day 4

Day 4:
Crown Valley Brewing Raspberry Wheat Beer.

Very orange color.  Lots of carbonation, too much in fact to the point of being really distracting.  Flavor isn't bad, light bodied.  Seemed to start with less of the raspberry flavor, but as I drank more, it became much more prevalent.

The bottle says "Brewing a Missouri Legend, Our Raspberry Wheat is an American Wheat beer aged on generous amounts of Oregon raspberries to give it a mild but sweet taste."

Another one, I didn't mind, save for the carbonation, but again, not great, not bad.
Probably wouldn't buy this one again either, but would drink it if it was offered.

30 Days 30 Beers Day 3

Day 3:

Monty Python's Holy Grail
Black Knights Reserve Dark Yorkshire Ale.

The Bottle states that it is tempered over burning witches...

It's not bad, probably wouldn't be on my day to day drinking list though.  Can't really think of a whole lot to say about the flavor, average at best I suppose.  The beer is nowhere near as good as it's namesake.  The bottle looks pretty cool though, at least it will be a keeper.

30 Days 30 Beers- Day 2

Day 2:

My goodness...

All I can say is, I don't remember it being this good.  Gets better with every pint.

30 days 30 beers

No this isn't arcade related, but I'm putting it here anyway.
It's too damn hot to do anything in the arcade anyway :D

I'm 4 days into this already, been posting it on a webforum I frequent, I'll copy what I've done already to this post, and start one post per day with day 5.

Note: I am not a beer snob connoisseur, so don't expect the type of reviews that you see on those sites where any beer that isn't brewed in some tiny microbrewery in a town no one has ever heard of (minimum 500 miles from any major metropolitan area), using only the local artisan spring water which has been personally spooged in by 40 virgins on a nightly basis is considered swill.
My reviews are going to be more along the lines of "Does it taste good?  What does it taste like?  What color is it? Would I buy it again"
That being said, here are days 1-4.

Day 1:
Leinenkugels Summer Shandy

Label describes it as "A weiss beer brewed with honey with a natural lemonade flavor"...

Not bad, not great, figured it would be a lot sweeter, but thankfully it had just a bit of lemon flavor... more like a lemon peel than a lemonade flavor.   The lemon wasn't really too overpowering (at least to me.)
Pretty good though for a hot summer day, goes down really easy.  Grabbed a few of these cans as they were on sale, and went through them pretty quickly.

Another Arcade Auction + more

Superauctions was back in Belleville on 4/7/2012.
Not a bad auction, picked up a "Die Hard" Arcade for $25 and a Merit Megatouch IV for $37.50
The Die Hard had a cart error, got it home, reseated the cart, and it plays perfectly.
The Megatouch worked fine but wasn't taking coins. Pulled it apart, and there were 3 quarters jammed in the mech, cleaned them out and it works fine as well.
Didn't take down any of the prices, as again they were not writing them on the machines (and I forgot to bring a pen) There was a ton of people taking down prices, but none seem to have posted them... next time I'll have to remember.
Link to some pictures of the auction:
http://www.thebasementarcade.com/auction040712.htm

Only problem is the thing is too big to fit through the gameroom door.
I should be able to get it in with a few Ross Gellar like PIVOT! moves...

Also been working on my Williams multigame. Got the cab mostly sanded down, still need to do a bit more sanding before starting on rebuilding the bottom part.

You can see the Robotron 2084 sideart peeking through the black paint. Sadly I couldn't save any of it, as the person who repainted it used an oil based paint rather than latex, so only the most powerful paint stripper would take it off, and in the process ruin the artwork below.

Here's a pic of the side after most of the paint has been stripped away, and I started sanding.

And this is after most of the sanding has been completed, there's still a bit of paint left to finish.

More to come on this.

Game Gavel

If you love video games but hate eBay/GameStop, there is an alternative.

Disclaimer: No, I am not getting paid, nor do I get any kickbacks from these guys if I drive traffic to them. And no I don't even sell on the site. They just run a great site, and it's a great way of finding deals on games without using eBay or going to GameStop and the like.

So if you're thinking about picking up a game on the feebay, or running over to gameslop, why not pop over to the Gavel first.
That is all.
